In the fall of her freshman year at Syracuse University, Karelle was set to compete at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in India. She was unable to attend the Games due to a back injury. She suffered a bulging disc that took her off the track for three years. A doctor told her that she would probably never run again and that she should think about picking up a new “hobby”. Although Karelle thought about quitting, she realized that as a hurdler overcoming obstacles is what she does every day! Her back injury was just another obstacle she had to overcome. She worked hard and eventually made a successful return to the track in 2012.
Karelle now uses her personal story to teach children and youth about the importance of never giving up, working hard, and using obstacles as sources of motivation. She gives motivational speeches at elementary and high schools in hopes of inspiring students to follow their dreams and achieve their potential.
